Harlan and Associates is closed today, January 8th, 2010.
Have you looked outside? There’s snow everywhere!
Because of the bad weather, Harlan and Associates is closed today.
We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause, and when we get back, we’ll work extra-hard on any closing today’s weather may have affected.
We’ll also be occasionally checking our email throughout the day.
Since pretty much everyone is staying home today, it’s a great time to make cookies. Here’s one of our favorite recipes:
Mr. Keller’s Sugar Cookies
8 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
1 vanilla bean, split
1 cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Combine the butter and the confectioners’ sugar in a stand mixer or in a large bowl with a hand mixer and beat until they are blended. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean, add them to the bowl, and mix until everything well combined. Add about ¾ cup flour and mix until combined. Then add additional flour until the dough no longer sticks to the side of the bowl. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator.
After the dough has been in the refrigerator for about an hour, move it to a light-floured work surface. Halve the dough and roll each piece into a log about an inch in diameter. Wrap again in plastic and refrigerate until the dough is firm enough to slice.
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees, and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Mix the granulated sugar and the cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut each log into slices about 3/8 inches thick. Coat each slice with the cinnamon sugar mixture and put it on a baking sheet.
Bake in two batches for about 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Transfer to a rack to cool.
